Match Report

Corofin, playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd had the opportunity to test players in new positions and to welcome Joe Slattery back to midfield where his running, fielding and tackling were a feature of this game. After a competitive first half where everyone gave their all, the third quarter was more difficult but gave Corofin the opportunity to ensure everyone good game time.

Cillian Cummins had a fine game in goal as he continues to work hard on his kick out strategy and speed to the ball. He was well supported by Oisin Tierney and Padraigh Murphy, with the latter moving from his customary centre back position to provide extra cover in the 2-man full back line. They gave an exhibition of holding up and dispossessing their man in the tackle.

In front of them the centre back line that started out the season were re-united with Rory Fitzgerald showing continuous improvement in getting first to the ball while Darragh Moran ensured a regular outlet for the goalie’s kick outs while maintaining a strong and speedy presence at centre back. The ever-steady Diarmuid de Brun was the target for many kick outs and regularly supplied his forwards with quality ball.

The previously mentioned Joe Slattery was partnered by Colm Whelan who continues to improve in the challenging role of a midfielder and his free-taking responsibilities do not deter his overall commitment to maintaining a high work rate and accurate delivery to his inside forwards.

This was Gerard Queally-Callinan’s first start and he gave an encouraging display of speed, determination and showed an ability to win possession that augurs well for his future. Mark O’Callaghan at centre-forward provided pace and skill that kept his inside forwards well supplied and his deep tracking provided the extra cover that was regularly called for. John Greene on the other wing found more space that he was used to in the corner and he thrived on it. His many tracking runs gave him the opportunity to show he can add defensive duties to his attacking ones.

Bodbh Raleigh and Dean Crowe completed the inside line. Bodbh displayed the calm of a corner forward that he continues to build on while Dean continues to improve his skills at winning oossessionand good judgement on when to lay off to the player in a better position.

When legs began to tire and when there was clear need to keep the scoreboard ticking over the introduction of Tomás Barry, Josh O’Sullivan, Luke Curtis and Eimhin Bane brought a sense of renewed energy as they clearly displayed a strong desire to challenge for their starting places.

As the home crowd drifted to the exit, the pleasant murmur of future hopes hung in the air - like bird calls muted in the evening heat - ‘they’re improving’.
